Our History

Gatherings began in 1885 with official organization in 1893. Late in the 19th century, Episcopal congregations were established in northern Minnesota and on Native American reservations. The first Episcopal church in Grand Rapids was built in 1901. It was called the Church of the Holy Communion. The church has also been known as St. Mark’s and Christ Memorial during subsequent years; currently is Christ Episcopal Church.

In the early1950’s, this mission church became an independent parish and a new building was constructed in 1953 to accommodate a growing congregation. Additions to the church have included offices, a nursery, a meeting place known as the Founder’s Room, and a columbarium. A second columbarium was added in 2013.

Community involvement and acceptance of all has been a hallmark for members of the congregation and the clergy.

Mission: At Christ Church, we are committed to our mission “To know Christ and to make Him known”.

We:

Listen

To God through Word, prayer, and worship, and to God in the needs of the hungry, the lonely, and the oppressed .

Proclaim

The hope in the Gospel of Jesus Christ and in justice, peace, and reconciliation for all people .

Serve

As disciples of Jesus and as faithful stewards of the Earth and all God-given gifts.

Celebrate

God’s presence and love in all creation and the unity and love of our diverse community.

Christ Church is a Total/Shared Ministry church in which the congregation raised up a team of leaders, all volunteers, who were ordained and/or commissioned in December 2009 to assume the role formerly filled by the pastor. Through the eyes of the Total Ministry model, we recognize the baptismal understanding that all have gifts for ministry and are ministers in God’s eyes.

You are welcome at Christ Church no matter where you are on your spiritual journey.
